Hi guys,
I'm in a metal band and we have 3 guitarists, there was origonally 2 me and another guy. Just recently after our 1st gig the 3rd guitarist thort he would join in to be a singer as we needed another one. the problem is that he hasn't sung and never will, we cannot cope with 3 guitarists and we need to find a way to sack him. he is not good for the band and his comparisons between him and zakk wylde really No Swearing, Big Kev us off.
The guy is one of our best friends how do we sack him?

A) Pay some random punter to pretend to be a band manager and get him to say you need to drop the guitarist for the good of the band.
B) Send hate mail from pretend fans telling him how poor he is compared to the rest of you.
C) Kill him.
D) Just tell him.

If he's a good mate it should be easier than if its someone who you just know.
"hey dude, you know we are great mates and everything, but we just cant hack 3 guitarists in this group, and much as you know i love you, you cant sing for ****, so heres the deal, as its stands we just havnt got room for you, HOWEVER (if hes a decent player) if matey over there gets lost, you are first in line"
BOSH!
Then buy him a pint.

Just say hey man you aint got the beard or the thirst for beer like Zakk Wylde, now get your stuff an clear off.

Only kidding! Just say it how it is like a mate would, explain it to him nicely and hope there are no hard feelings.

I am looking forward to dmpoole's answer. :D

Easy - get the rhythm guitarist to do it :D
(its been Colins job to sack 3 drummers in the band).

To be honest, in the 30 previous years of gigging, all the bands I've been in have just died a natural death and I've never sacked anybody.

You've got to be hard and just tell him. Stringing him along will be no good for anybody in the long run.

Give him a song that you know he has no hope in hell of playing, say you want to go that direction and fire him for not being good enough.

OR

Just be honest with him.

Correct procedure for sacking a band member is to just book the next gig / rehearsal / whatever and not inform them. Let them find out that way. It's the age old method. If you can get someone else in their place even better.

I once sacked a bass player at our first ever practice cos he was rubbish. He wasn't best pleased, as it was his band.

Just remembered I was sacked once and it was very subtle.
I joined a futuristic band around 81 and we had a single at about number 90 (I'll have to post it one day).
We were like chalk and cheese and at one gig I'm waiting on the stage wearing jeans, Motorhead t-shirt and a wrangler jacket standing behind my synths and a guitar round my neck, when the other four walked on dressed in all black with thin white ties and makeup on
That was as subtle as a sledgehammer.

I've never been in a band but I've known a few. Have any of you been in a "its either me or him" situation?

(see you at the Star on friday dmp).

Funnily enough in 36 years I've only done a "its either me or him" statement twice and both have been with this band and both have been drummers.
The first drummer was a complete arse and nothing was his fault. We were rehearsing 747 Strangers In The Night and he'd got all his notes on a piece of paper on the wall. He played the song completely wrong and accused us of re-writing his notes in his handwriting  That was just one of many incidents and he had to go before I killed him.
The drummer who we sacked in April this year was also taking things too far by turning up very late at every gig, expecting us to carry his gear in, sending another drummer when he was playing with another band, cancelling one gig to play with another band, arguing with landlords/landladies and I just about had enough.
Contrary to popular belief by some on here, I don't think I'm anything special, nor is my band and all I'm doing is trying to play out in a rock band until I retire. I've probably got another couple of years shelf life in me and I want to do my time with the least hassle possible. I can then retire and just hark on about how I used to play in a band blah blah blah.

Just remembered another sacking I had and could be the answer for Castor.
It was about 78 and I was singing in a rock band and be aware at this point in my life I had not got a rock voice or anything approaching one. The band decided to call it a day and go their seperate ways. I walked into a pub one evening because I heard a local band were playing and it was my band with another singer :( He was bloody brilliant though and during the 90's he won Stars In Their Eyes doing Bryan Adams. I told them they should have been honest with me because you always get found out in the end. They said they hadn't got the heart to tell me I couldn't sing rock music :)

Be absolutely truthful. Try to resolve the problems with dialogue - people are surprisingly reasonable if you approach them sympathetically.

I've sacked: 2 singers, 1 bassist, about 4 drummers, a guitarist, an absolutely terrible sax player and a really, really good percussionist who embarrassed me ;) Some were tougher than others, but all left amicably. I've never been kicked out of a band, touch wood :)
