I know that it can sometimes be included in the item description but sometimes some retailers just copy paste it from the mnufacturers site without knowing if it is the later revisions. So how can you tell if its got dual bios switch?

As above all new ones are not unlockable.

You can also forget all 1GB models and most, if not all, custom cooler designs as they also often modify the PCB.

Personally I'd just take a MSI 6950 2GB Twin FrozR II or the Sapphire 6950 2GB over some flashable reference 6950 2GB.

Custom quiet and effcient cooler plus free games> flashable but with a crappy loud inefficent cooler with a mere 3% extra speed..

I read a good review (Ill see if I can find it) which proved that flashing the bios to unlock the shaders gave minimal improvements. They basically recommended leaving the bios as is and just overclocking. If that is in fact true then you are better off with a non ref design which will have a better cooler

Ive read all the reviews on that card and even this one ... if its the review I am thinking of... They 'assume' that because it has a dual bios switch that it can be flashed.

As far as I know the only place I have seen someone flash one of those was here on this forum and to tell you the truth I am a bit skeptical since nowhere else have I seen anyone successful with flashing them.

look up your specific release of 6950 and check :)

i believe that there are some sites out there that show every card which can be unlocked and a chart showing how many members succeeded in flashing to a 6970 rom, and how many members failed.

There are but that was in the early days when every card was a reference design.

All the cards at OcUK now are non-reference designs.

Something like 2-3 frames if I remember rightly. Still I'll taking a free 2-3 frames regardless of clocking.

Shouldn't matter if you're checking against your specific card though surely?

Also some non-references will shader unlock.

As has been posted, almost no new 6950s unlock. I'd get a TwinFrozr III or similar and OC it, you'll end up with similar performance and lower noise levels than an unlocked reference board.

got a 6950 directCU II, will clock to 1ghz with 1.28v but will not unlock, tried RBE or wizard's script, even flashing to a 6970 bios, still won't unlock.. well happy to run it at 1ghz thou. 24/7. temp in the 70's load
