Your local library should have a good selection of PhotoShop books, and you should only be asked to fork out any money if you reserve a book or you don't take them back on time!

I went to college to learn, but I started off with SAMS Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop 6 and I learnt more from the book than I ever did on the course.

A really great PhotoShop Book I bought (even though my pockets only open one way) is Steve Caplin's "How to cheat at photoshop", I've had dozens of book out of the library but this book is by far the best and enjoyable too :)
