How to learn the guitar?

I've had a guitar for ages but never really got round to playing it. I'm quite bored atm so maybe I'll give it a go. What's a good book to get me started? I can do basic chords and stuff but I want to play basic choons etc. Everyone says Good Riddance is really easy for beginners but I tried it and it was hard.

And where do you get those electronic tuner things from? Do they work?

I feel like such a noob.

You can get a tuner from any music shop, or if needs be argos.

Green Day, Bob Dylan etc. - stuff which is supposedly easy to play on the guitar so its even more annoying that i cant.

Also, if you are serious about it, get some lessons, even if it is only a few.

When i first started i was self teaching for about 6months, with a friend helping me every now and again, as soon as i gota teacher he sorted my technique out, and within the 2 months ive had him i really have noticed a difference!

Try and learn as many tabs as possible, for example this site is good. UltimateGuitar.. Definately a great way to learn styles, expand ability and just get in regular practise by learning your fave tracks/songs.

Just try and stick at it, it also helps GREATLY if you can get a tutor, or even just someone to go through a couple of songs with you and explain/show them through thoroughly. Definately speeds up the time taken to pick things up.

EDIT :: Ok if your into Bob Dylan, then 'Born in time' is really quite simple to play with just basic chords (forgetting about the intro..). Here's a link and if you hover over the chords it gives a diagram of how you to play them.
