I have a photo that I would like to improve but being an absolute beginner I was after advice on how to go about it.

The photo is here: http://www.techmonkeys.co.uk/KiD/images/photos/ilkley/DSC00342.JPG (pic is nearly 3mb in size)

I know it aint great, but I would really like to make it into a print for my mum and dad, it is my dad stood next to an engraving he did of my mums name 32 years ago on Ilkley Moor.

I would really like to bring the engraving out a bit more and generally make it a nice picture to look at.

Thanks a lot guys!

OK, il show you the end result i got.
I have to admit, i have done a lot of things on photoshop but i did find this hard to get looking much better than it does.
I tried using a contrast layer and selectively rubbing that layer away, but it didnt improve it

Instead i chose to use the burn and dodge tool, and lightened the midtones of the centre of the writing, and used the burn tool to slightly darken areas, like you would see shadow on a text letter normally.

Not sure if it looks to much like its been a bit drawn on, thats what i was trying to avoid.
As for making into a photo you would want to see, i made a few colour adjustments but nothing massive. Not really sure how you want it cropped so i didnt,

Thanks guys, I thought it might be a little bit too much :)

I will have to go back up when the weather is better and get a nicer picture.
