Hi all,

i want to backup my work, however i do not want the NTFS permissiosn to be taken with my files.

The reason being, should everything fail, id like to restore my work onto a different system (maybe in a different domain or not in a domain at all).

If the NTFS permissions are backed up and say the domain is lost, i lose access to all the work.

Crumbs!

Any help appreciated.

kind regards
TM

You could back up on to a FAT32 partition, that way they would lose their permissions.

To be honest though, it doesnt matter, if you come to need the files and it says permission denied.

As long as you are admin on the machine you can just take ownership of the files again.

I didn't realise this! Thanks guys, how exactly do you go about doing this?

Basically I have setup roaming profiles and re-directed folders.

As the administrator, I couldn't view any of the users folders on the server. They needed to log in and give the administrator access.

How would I go about allowing the administrator view/take control of the files?

Thanks guys,

Unless of course you've actually encrypted the files.
Just by using the encryption system built into WinXP/Vista you can totally lose access to your files.
However ikt's not easy to "accidentally" encrypt data.

nothing in encrypted

wow you've made my day. i didnt realise i could do this, thus if i lose the domain, I dont lose everyones work...

happy days :) thanks guys.
