How to make a 3d particle explosion??

Does anyone have a bit of knowledge to share on how I can create the following.

It is probably a particle add-on for after effects or similar and I am willing to learn if its simple enough, otherwise I might have to pay to have it created.
I am finding it hard to google the answer specifically enough to find tutorials so wondered if anyone had any ideas how it's done.

Thanks. There is a perfect tutorial for what I want.
Sometimes what you want is right out there, it's just about finding the right key words.
