I have 2 machines with identical Seagate 320Gb drives. I thnk they are the noisiest drives I've ever had. Anyway, in one machine with a cheap steel case, the noise is just tolerable. But in my expensive all aluminium Lian Li case, they are just awful. It seems like the case magnifies the noise  And with Vista working the drive excessively for no good reason... :D

I guess what I need is something like rubber insulators, grommets or something, can anyone recommend a product to try and isolate the drive from the case a little and reduce the noise ?

As you suspect it's more the case resonating than the drive itself. Rubber grommets and the like can be OK but suspending the drive with bungee cord is the best option. If you search for "bungee mod" you'll see some posts on how it's done.

"the case magnifies the noise "

Not being picky, I'm trying to think of the proper word for make the sound louder/more pronounced. ah it's going to do my head in all night now! :)

Don't bother with any of those gimmicky silencers they do not work

just get some sewing machine elastic or even string and suspend within the 3.5 or 525 bays.

A simple criss cross pattern and tie at one side or knots whatever think of a shoe lace that sort of thing.

I'll take a pic of mine later it looks daft but works incredibly well.
