I own a non wireless adsl modem currently,I could upgrade to adsl wireless modem but I prefer my current modem it really is rock solid and stable.

Can I buy a device that basically sticks into a spare Ethernet port on the back of the router and give me an instant wireless network?

It would be ideal if it was easy setup and could cover upstairs and downstairs, thanks.

thx, any other suggestions was thinking a device that is just usb powered ?

Or any such device that can plug into an wall outlet and give me an wireless access point via the ethernet adsl modem ?

Not sure such exist...

Do you have a modem or a router?
What make/model is it?
How do you currently connect to it? Usb or Ethernet?

Its an Netgear ADSL modem router 834G model, ethernet to laptop.

No wireless, Id like to keep it since its rock solid and works, don't mind going power ethernet plugs route but unsure if those wireless access point power plugs can take a wired connection from the modem to it and and make it wifi ?

ADSL non wireless modem> Wireless access Power plug > Wifi in house ?

Yup, just goggled it. You sure you've got the right model name? (check if it's got wireless, might just be disabled in the configuration pages)

sorry dg834, no wireless on it...

3 ports free.

Yeah I guess the easy option is the wireless router, was kinda hoping to stick something in it and just make it wireless.

I see some £10 devices on flebay called this
"Wireless Wifi Bridge AP Repeater WPS Client Mini LAN Router Extender Booster UK"

Has ethernet port and powered via usb, I think its an wifi access point.... sounds like what I kinda want to achieve.

I have used wireless routers in the past but had hit and miss reliability so like my existing modem/setup kinda....

If it's THIS then you can pick up a DG834GT from well known auction sites for around a fiver. The DG834GT is identical (same chipset etc) but also includes wireless G. However unless your internet is on the slow side you've probably more to gain by grabbing a wireless N router with gigabit (the Netgear DG834 series is only 100Mbit with wireless G).

I liked the look of that TL_WR702N but was concerned with

"can conveniently connect to the internet and share the connection around an average sized room at 150Mbps"

Seems limited to one room... otherwise that would have been perfect choice.

I have a TL-WR702N as my only wireless, and it's stuck behind (and powered by) a plasma television in the living-room, which isn't ideal.

For my use (a couple of phones and a laptop) it covers the entire building well enough. Upstairs in my office my iPhone 5S just managed 46/18 on Speedtest.net compared to the 60/18 I get from my desktop with a wired connection.

It'll depend on the construction of the building. My house is an 80s build three bed detached with mainly stud-work and plasterboard internal walls. If it was more solidly built the wireless would probably struggle.

yup think its the only option.... seen one for a fiver already plenty used adsl modems around so looks like the best choice.

Wireless G is a pretty poor option even compared to the lowest spec. 150Mbps wireless-N.

I used to have a DG834G, and the TL-WR702N is at least as good. A 'real' wireless-N access point with decently sized antennas would walk all over it.

Also, there's no guarantee that DG834G(T) would match the ADSL performance of the existing DG834. There where many versions based on different chipsets, some much better than others.

thanks Bremen, did not notice the edit seems you found the TL-WR702 to be just fine for upstairs even, reviews suggested it only works well in same room.

So its still an viable option for me at least, yeah seen a few DG834G modems there on the cheap and possible, I think it would be nicer to perhaps skip the TL-WT702 and get an wireless N access point/router and just use that to either replace existing kit or turn it into a dedicated wireless access point, am leaning towards that idea. Plenty of cheap netgear and other wireless n routers for between £10-20 on flebay.
