How to migrate iPhones?

Hi all,

I've had an iPhone 3g for 18 months, and just got the opportunity to upgrade, so I have a 3gs, woo! The idea here was also to let my girlfriend use my old 3g, on another provider (she doesn't use much data, just wants the games and ipod capabilities). I've already unlocked (not jailbroken) my 3g, so she can put her sim in it.

I'm wondering, in terms of syncing with iTunes and all that sort of stuff, what order should I do things in? I want to migrate all my data, settings and apps from my current setup (with my 3g), onto my 3gs, then wipe the 3g and allow her to install it separately, on her laptop. I know how precious iTunes can be sometimes, so thought I'd check for the right sequence of actions first.

Any pointers? Thanks in advance!

From what I;ve read on mac forums fo go:

1) Make a itune sync to 3G and backup
2) Do a firmware RESTORE on 3G. Hopefully everything is wiped out here.
3) Activate 3GS using the same computer
4) Sync using the same computer to 3GS
5) 3G - settings, general, reset, erase all content and settings

Is your upgrade though O2? I've been trying to get though to them for days to talk about upgrades, but the lines are jammed.

Can I ask what you are paying?

Thanks, Asprilla.

Yes, it's through O2. The lines are really busy, and they've had system problems lately, but persist.

First couple of sales people I spoke to gave the same offers as to new customers, pretty much the same a Orange deals etc. When I finally decided to go for it, the guy I spoke to gave me the handset free (16GB), with £34 for 24 months (normally £90 when you do that!), so there are breaks to be had! I'd only been an O2 customer since my 3g, 18 months ago.

Good luck!

As per your instructions - sounds great, except I think I will do step 2 AFTER 3 and 4, just making sure the 3gs gets everything correctly!

Thanks for the help!

Holy tread revival....

Just spoke to O2 about my upgrade and they offered me a reboxed 32gb White 3GS for free. OK, so someone else has had it but they claim Apple have replaced the covers and done a fresh install, so that will do for me.

Keogh: yes, followed those steps exactly and it all worked. I did have to plug in my 3gs twice for the PC to recognise it properly, it may have just had to charge a bit.
