So I have a 7990 + 7970 not set up in crossfire (but could be) and I want to keep my 7990 mining (with cgminer) yet have it be ignored by everything else and use the 7970 for desktop, games etc.

Is this possible?

Yes.
use 7970 as main gpu with monitor plugged in. Turn off x fire.
Then set up miner on 7990 cores and then load a game.. game will use GPU by default

oh that simple!?

with the miner do you have to disable the 7970 with '-d 0' ? as that will be the first recognized card.

I'm under the impression that -d 0 means device 0, not disable. So realistically with the 7970 in the first slot and the 7990 in the second, you probably want -d 1 -d 2 , or possibly -d 1,2 depends. The 7970 should be device 0, with the two 7990 gpu's d 1 and 2. But might take a little playing with to find the right numbers and commands.

If you get it running alongside a game, I'd be interested in your results.
Try a in game benchmark of something both while mining, and not mining, see if there is much/any performance hit.
