How to network Win 7 with XP?

Is it possible to network a windows 7 pc with an XP pc, with internet sharing (gateway with Win 7 being the primary) without breaking all windows 7 security settings like some pages suggest after a google search?

my setup is a direct cable modem to pc via ethernet to onboard LAN, there is a PCI network card with a crossover cable that connects to the onboard LAN on the XP machine

As stated, get a cable router. They're so cheap these days and saves all the fiddling around on the PC and relying on a PC to be turned on etc.

They should've given you one when you got it installed, so doubt they would just give you one now.. Worth a call, you never know!

I'm trying to connect both my Win 7 and XP machine via homegroup and XP just doesn't get it

You must be running Windows 7 to join a homegroup. Use a Workgroup instead.

Finally figured out how to do this

very simple once i found it and i can keep all the 128 bit/password protection settings on windows 7 and the connection is shared across the network, the only down side is that the shared folders only work on a 1 way system as in I can only transfer files from Win7 to XP (unless I 'grab' the files from the XP shared folder)

YES YES! im still getting used to Win 7, you can take the boy out of XP but you can't take XP out the boy
