How To OC An AMD GPU And Which Program To Test It?

I have never overclocked a graphics card.

I'm going to OC my 6950 Toxic using Trixx but was wondering:

-Should I set PowerTune to +20% in CCC to stop it throttling under load?

-What is the max safe temperature? Does 85ish under full load and 90 max sound about right?

-Voltage is currently 1.175 but what is the max safe voltage?

-Should I set the voltage in the bios or use Trixx?

-Which program is best for testing stability?

Ah an easy one for the evening!

First download MSI AfterBurner .

This program allows you to overclock your GPU a lot better than any other software out there and also shows you the temps, gpu usage, core speed, fan speed etc (basically everything your card is doing and the temps it runs at). And a nice feature in it, allows you to show what FPS your getting in game, how much memory a game is using and the temps of your gpu by a little display in the corner while you are in game, it is in pink, but I think you can change the colour.

Also MSI AB allows you to record gameplay and take screenshots of your games while in game etc.

To bench, I would recommend Unigine Heaven Benchmark.

This software will push your GPU and the overclock to the limit. Just watch the temps and artefacts and you should be ok.

And yea, make temps for any card is around 85/90

I entered this thread only to find that #2 has included everything I'd like to say...

Stability test options:

a) Run Furmark or Kombustor for 1 hour; or

b) Run Unigine Heaven loop for a whole night.

Thanks for the replies. I'll download Afterburner and Unigine for a look tonight.

Should I set PowerTune to +20% and just leave the voltage at 1.175?

+1 for the furmark, pretty good quick stability tester!

And thanks Harmony xD

Just to clarify for people that are wondering what I'm talking about with PowerTune, it's been replaced with a slider for Power Control Settings in the Catalyst Control Centre.

I'll bench my card with it at 0 then bump it up to 50% and see if there's any difference before I start pushing the card.

Oh! I don't use that piece of software on my HD5770.

I wouldn't bother using it and just use MSI AB for everything to do with the power output of the card.

You can just install the driver and not CCC is you don't want too.

CCC is there in case you want to tweak the card a little like using EyeFinity for multiple displays or tweaking the colour of the display via the card etc.

The TRIXX software is not part of CCC, TRIXX is like MSI-AB, an overclocking software, but MSI-AB is a lot better.

You can choose what setting you want the V-Core to be in MSI-AB and don't need to use CCC to change it.

Do ALL overclocking in MSI-AB!
