Hi.

I have had a Core 2 Duo chip for about 4 years now and i recently read a magazine on overclocking (as i am soon getting a Sandybridge upgrade) and it said that the e6580 chip which i have is widely regarded as one of the easiest and most stable chips to OC.

I was shocked at this as i have a full watercooled system and even a northbridge cooler etc, on a nVidia 680i MoBo, which is aparantly great at keeping overclocked pc's cool.

I am not an idiot and have tried to OC this a few times but for one my CPU multiplier is locked at 9 max and can only go down to 6 (but that defeats the object). Secondly i hate this MoBo, anytime i touch it, it screams at me and boots in safe mode or i get BSOD.

Can someone go through a step by step guide of steps i can take to OC this chip on my system, with my Bios in mind, as i have read stuff online and its nothing like my options.

Furthermore i have some memory i dont feel is getting used to its full potential, so tips on increasing that speed will be nice too.

P.s i have also just bought a Crucial M4 128gb SSD so any tips on getting that optimised will be appreciated, but bear in mind my system is otherwise 4 years old so some new options might not be available to me.

On my windows index score i get a 6.4 now with my chip and my memory being the bottleneck. My GPU is a 8800GTS (old i know) but still gets a good score, and my SSD is rated at 7.1 so i want to try to boost the limiting scores a little as i will be upgrading in a month or so. So this is only a patch to keep me going and get used to OCing my PC withoout my exspensive new rig at risk.

I wouldnt be as mad if i blew this one up so i am eager to learn now :)

P.P.P.S

My system is:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3GHz Socket 775 4MB Cache 1333MHz FSB

EVGA nForce 680i SLI SKT775 7.1channel audio DDR2 ATX Motherboard

EVGA 8800 GTS SuperClocked 640MB GDDR3 PCI-E Graphics Card

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 (OCZ2N1066SR2GK) Dual Channel SLI Ready Edition (OR SIMILAR, THINK I RMA'D THIS ONE AND GOT ANOTHER BRAND)

Coolermaster RealPower Pro 850W PSU - 6x 12v Rails, 4x PCI-E Connectors, 13.5cm Fan

Just checked my old invoice and i got the CPU numbers the wrong way round :P

Jusy bought a magazine called "The ultimate overclocking handbook" and managed to overclock my FSB to 1770 giving me a processing speed of over 4.0Ghz with my e6850 Core 2 Duo.

Man i cant believe i was so impatient with this whole overclocking lark before.

My windows index score last week was 5.9 as my WD velociraptor was the bottleneck and now i have my Crucial M4 SSD i get a 7.1 with the SSD.

It then jumped to 6.3 with my CPU being the slowest and after a few inside tips "(like turing off the intel speed step and spectrum effects etc.) my CPU no longer screams at me when overclocked. I also turned up the volts by around 0.1v for the CPU, northbridge and the memory by 0.2v and so far its nice and stable with the FSB at 1770 gicing me a total speed of over 4.0Ghz :-O

My GPU is now the limiting factor and my index is at 6.8

Gonna try to increase my GPU clock now but so here goes.....

The tip is people read, read and read again then do... Like the classic carpenters trick measure three times, cut once :)

Dont give up on overclocking, i have a 4 year old system and i have only just gained massive boosts in performance because i could be arsed to go buy a £15 magazine thats 217 pages and read it cover to cover.

No one will do it for you but its worth it in the long run if you take the time to do it properly

:D

Just over clocked my 8800GTS 640mb to 700Mhz core clock and 2000mhx mem clock lol.

Should keep me going for a while untill i get the i5 SB upgrade :P
