Hi there
can anyone help me I have an i7 920 cpu and wish to overclock. I have used the auto tool to do this and my system has overclocked from stock (2.67ghz to 3.15ghz) but my core voltage, sorry cant remember the value!!, is highlighted red as unstable so the supplied asus autotool has not adjusted the core voltage and I guess I need to change it in the bios menue but I am unsure how to do this. Detailed instructions would be greatly apreceated as i'm a complete novice. many thanks for any help.

overclocking Sabertooth

Hi Setter
Thanks for the reply. I have opened your link but cant see a guide for overclocking? just a review on cables/ sorry if i'm looking in the wrong place please advise. As to cpu fan I have a Noctua special edition SE2 two fans push-pull so hope that will be ok. Once again thanx for your help all.

Ahh, sorry about that, (few too many beer last night).:o Ive edited the op with the correct link. Cooler will be fine. The guide above was the one i used to clock my own combination, i found it to be pretty decent.:)

overclocking sabertooth x58

thanks for that mate. Have run an overclock with the sabertooth tool (Intel extreme tuning utility) as this seems prety easy as it does all yhe work!!! (yep i;m a noob) and my system is now runing at 3.23 ghz-max turbo and processor 1 core voltage (highlighted red) is 1.3360 v. have used the utility cpu stress test at six hours and it has passed so seems i have a stable overclock?. Do you have any thoughts?. Once again thank you for taking time to read-coment.

1.3360v is extremely high for such a modest overclock, theese auto utilitys tend to set very high voltages. Hence why overclocking is best done in bios. High vcore voltage leads to higher temps. As an example, my own 920 will run 4ghz on 1.300 vcore, 1.3125 at 4.2, iirc i could get right up to 3.6ghz on 1.200v.

sabertooth overclock

Ah thanx for that have used the voltage tab in the utility to reduce that (1.3360 down to 1.2750) runing quick stress test to see if stable!. will let you no what ocurs. once again thanx for your input.

Heres a few bios shots from when i was running4ghz, (21x193)

Turn off cpu and pcie spread spectrum, uncore clock should be 2x ram speed, or 2x +1, ie my ram above was running at 1547mhz, 1547 x2 = 3094+1 to get 3095. The two most important voltage settings are qpi/dram and vcore, maximum reccomended are.

qpi/dram, 1.3500
vcore, 1.400

For the actual ddr ram voltage, (dram bus voltage), most triple channel ddr3 kits are rated at 1.65v, 1.66v is fine as the boards only allow increment raises in 2's. Dont worry when it shows up a red warning at 1.66v, itll be fine.
