The last time I had a mouse pad was probably back in 1999 before optical sensor mice because the new big thing. I'm about to invest in a new gaming mouse and would like a mouse pad to go with it.

What should I be looking for in one? I play FPS, RTS, RPG games mainly.

mouse pad , ah you mean 'gaming surface' :D

Can't go wrong with Steelseries QCK range.

I use a plus for desktop and a mini for my lappy mouse. Not too expensive, but if you want to splash out go for the luxuriously thick 'heavy' variant.

I still have a Dell one from a PC I bought about 12 years ago! It's getting a bit frayed around the edges so I might get a new one. Is there actually any difference in them?

afaik laser mice prefer hard surfaces and optical prefers soft

Is this actually true? I've been looking into mouse pads for the last couple of days and to be honest I'm totally lost with all of the different options that are available.

The mice I'm looking at are either the Logitech G502 Proteus Core or the Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T 7 (which I owned in the past but it broke).

I've been testing it with my laser mouse (cheap sharkoon drakonia) since yesterday. I don't find any difference between my old Dell soft mouse mat and my desktop.

Qck Heavy is arguably the best, I have it under mouse and a desktop mat under KB/rest of desk.

Corsair 200 MM is also decent.

Yeah. I've always used my desktop up until now but I thought I'd see if upgrading to a mouse mat would make much difference to my day to day computer usage. I don't tend to play as many games as I used to these days so spend most of my time programming.

I'd like a mouse mat that makes it easy to deal with monitors with super high resolution really.

I basically just decided whether I wanted a hard or soft surface. Then decided on a size limit and went from there, looking at reviews on Youtube etc.

Cool. I'll look into that then. I guess from previous experience I'm looking for a hard surface since I'm used to using my desk already.

I play fps games a lot and can tell you now that fast swiping actions with your mouse will eventually wear down your mousemat's surface. Some occur faster than others and from personal experience avoid the ocuk branded mats. Whilst on the surface things appear good their durability is crap after a few months.
