How to play MKV files?

I'm having trouble with VLC which upto now used to be pretty impressive at running anything I could throw at it.

However *.mkv files tend to be slightly choppy now and so I'm looking for anything else that could play these files? I have downloaded the Matroska codec pack thing but that seems to have similar issues.

What do I need?

What CPU do you have? I have an AMD AM2+ 6000 which I'm quite annoyed isn't clearly fast enough. :(

It will be plenty fast enough. Are you downloading or using your HDs in any way whilst you're playing the mkvs? If so, stop doing so and check if there's any change in performance.

VLC plays 1080p MKV just fine for me, and im talking 15Gb sized files!
Do you find if you pause a vid like this it can take ages to get going again? That or fast-forwarding leaves you with a frozen screen but the audio from the new point in the file playing? Considering my PC spec I shouldn't have this problem. Guess I should ditch VLC proper and not just keep meaning to look at MPC etc.

That's the main reason why I switched to MPC.

Nope, I only needed on file from my linik above ;)

I have to say I'm ****ing impressed with the quality of the video. Watching Transformers atm and you can see every divot on Bumblebee and on Sam's forehead :p

Why are you looking at Sam's (Shia's) forehead? Shouldn't you be inspecting Megan more closely? :p

I use KM Player for all video types. Don't even have to download codec packs. So if you're wanting an alternative, I can recommend it.

Ok this really does irritate me. Now, I don't mind widescreen, however I don't want it like that. Why can't they release products where you're able to show more than one aspect ratio without the image being distored. Pfft...
