How to properly eject a disc on new PS3?

Might be a simple question but I'm referring to the new 500 GB PS3. It has like a sliding tray and an eject button.

The scenario: I was playing a game. I quit it like usual and I was in the system menu. I pressed the eject button and you can see the tail end of the disc spinning before it actually stops. This isn't surely the way Sony intended discs to be ejected.

The only two ways I have to do it properly would be

1. Turn the PS3 off and then eject the game.
2. The disc does seem to stop after like a minute in the system menu so maybe then.

So it's not a slot feeder, but an actual tray?

I've seen discs come out still spinning (briefly) from slot-fed drives, but ejecting while still rotating on a tray seems a bit off.

Mind you, I don't own a PS3 so can't really chime in with an informed opinion on that one!

By sliding tray you mean the cover, the actual drive is static.

It's normal with this type of drive TBH, just wait till it's stopped spinning, original PS was the same, you could open the cover and the disc would still be spinning. As long as it doesn't sound like the laser head is moving to read anything, you can probably even stop the disc with your finger tips (gently).

I remember when I used to have a PS1 and my mum would always be like "Never touch the disc while it's still spinning" and stuff like that. I always thought she had some insider knowledge but it was probably to make sure I never broke the thing. Hah.

I only ejected once on the system menu with the button so shouldn't be any real harm hopefully. I'll just wait till I 100% hear no noise from the disc spinning.

If you press Triangle, is there no 'remove disc' option?

In any case, the drive should be designed to slow/stop the disc as soon as the cover opens. It won't do any harm.

In this thread: people who never had a PS1 or Sega Saturn.

Press the button whenever you want. Remove the disc once it has visibly stopped moving. Common sense.

with a complicated system involving pulleys and a broomstick then a jukebox type cd changing system to select a new game using a actual modified jukebox.

Whilst cheap, I think the new PS3's are tacky and nothing like the older slims or the phat versions. A slide DVD cover?!?, what is this, the 1990's again with the PS1 pop lid!

Thats why its cheaper... less expensive parts!

Yeah, I avoided getting one of the new slims when my old PS3 died a couple of months ago for that very reason. Managed to get a nice 320GB 'original' slim from the MM.

Still doesn't feel quite as solid or well-built as the old one it replaced, but it's very quiet at least and no stupid flip-flaps!

A friend got a super slim over Christmas, it's not as bad as I thought it would be actually, certainly wouldn't call it tacky or cheap, just obviously made with cost savings in mind.
