My company iphone 4s went wrong the other week (speaker went dead) so I was sent out another pre-owned phone from someone who had left the company and this would not allow me to activate it so they sent me another pre-owned phone and I put my sim card into it and I was able to activate it but the phone does not show up in my apple id account.

I used this link

to try and register it to my apple account but it says that it belongs to another apple id (probably an engineer who has now left the company). Is there any way I can de-register it because the chances are my company won't know who used to own it?

to de-register from apple's icloud/findmyiphone activation lock you need to provide original receipt and send it to apple otherwise this phone is now become unless.

can you try get in touch with previous owner and tell them to remove the device from their icloud.com account.

How does this work for large businesses which may have over a hundred of these iphone's? Employee's who leave the business are not going to remember to de-register their company iphone from their apple account.

The result is lot's of pre-owned mobiles which cannot be re-activated?

yup... they should have better procedures for the return of company property and make sure they are deactivated before accepting them back i guess

Hand it back to your work and say it's still activated to someone else's account. Can't see how this is your problem.
