Lats night my son was playing around with his laptop and set a new password, now he cant remember the password. my first idea was a format lol, but then i got to thinking there must be a way to remove or reset the password.

Any ideas?
Laptop is running Win XP SP3

Thanks
Dave

get a linux password reset tool that can be booted from a usb key, or some other boot cd's will be able to do it, log on as the administrator account and reset it is another option.

First things first, Try alt ctrl del twice at the logon screen. This will provide you with a log on box, Type Administrator in the top box and leave the bottom box empty(If no password has been set) Should allow you to log on as administrator and remove the password from his account.

Try googling orphcrack, good free tool.

thanks just looked and that looks super :)

Google pogostick windows password recovery, awesome tool and works for most OS up to win7. I've used it many times to fix peoples computers when they have forgotten thier passwords.

If everyone googled their questions then many of the sections on these forums would be pointless wouldnt they. its always nice to get the advice of someone who has done it before, and if you're a member of a computer forum, well why not ask.

Google doesn't answer all questions so these forums are not pointless.

It's good that people post these questions on forums. It helps other people with their problems and also people can share their advice/experience.

Google is starting to answer a lot of questions with paid adverts and not always the best help.

anyway the problem is now solved thanks for the help.
