Hi all,

Right got a minor issue that is just bugging me. My father installed WinXP on a brand new HDD but prior to that he formatted the disk and somehow managed to copy the system files to it (format /s, I assume - although why he did it I have no idea :rolleyes: ). Therefore, when you boot from the disk it gives the choice of XP or 98. What files do I need to delete from the disk to stop this?

Cheers

Chris

I'm guessing you're wanting to use XP not 98

To sort out the dual boot simply insert your XP disk and select the repair option

you then need to use either fixboot or fixmbr (maybe both)

this should sort it out nicely

Edit the boot.ini file and remove the line that says something like:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 98" /noexecute=optin

Cool that'll get rid of the option in the WinXP boot up but which unnecessary files can I remove from c:?

IIRC it the files in C:\WINNT

Im 95% its that, as XP uses the WINDOWS folder.

huh, the system thinks 98 is installed because the mbr probably wasnt cleared (full format).

default
win 98 = \windows
xp = \windows

just edit the boot.ini file as above.
