How to REMOVE Rain-X from a Windscreen

Right, I've attacked it with vinigear/water/newspaper and then clay bar'd the windscreen. Both suggestions from here. Water does seem to run as if the RAin-X isn't there, but I can still see some swirl type patterns on the screen. Main test will be tomorrow morning I guess.

If this hasn't worked. Gonna go and get some of that Halfords cleaner.

I think after this hell, I'm going to avoid all sorts of treatments on the windscreen. Mine wasn't even that bad before Rain-X. I just thought it would make it a bit better.

Morning update. The vinegar hasn't worked! Still awful. Just going to have to bite the bullet, buy some of that glass cutter from halfords, and maybe get some new wipers whilst I'm at it

Nail polish remover almost always has additives such as perfume and oils chucked in it. Pure Acetone has none of that and should clean a windscreen no matter what its had applied to it. I'd suggest applying it with one of these to begin with ( just to clarify - it isn't a 'Brillo' pad  ):-

The pads above are not abrasive enough to cause any scratch issues on the glass but are much better than an ordinary cloth. You will get Pure Acetone in Boots but it isn't sat on the shelf, you need to ask at the pharmacy counter for it.

Then buff the windscreen with a clean, soft cloth. If the fancy takes you afterwards you can then clean the windscreen with your choice of glass cleaner if you so desire.

Also, I've no idea if RainX ends up on the windscreen wipers over time but if it does, clean your wiper blades thoroughly as they may well still smear even on an immaculately clean windscreen. I know this occurs with wash+wax products even after the windscreen has been rigorously cleaned if the blades are still contaminated. ;)

Did you clean the wipers with vinegar aswell, I always found fairy to pretty much remove anything waxy.

Vinegar and newspaper has always worked for me, so its surprising it hasnt for you :(

Surely it won't be that expensive will it? Guess its worth a try.

Yep, cleaned the wipers with vinegar as well. Ended up using ney-on pure vinegar on the windows/wipers. Still not off.

So I've still got Acetone & Intensive Glass Cutter to try.

Bet you it'll be your wipers that are crap. I had the exact same thing a few months ago, and i was conivinced it was this new wash and wax i had used. After doing what you have been doing, i changed my wipers and it was perfect. Just FYI, ecp are doing 25% off wipers. Got a set a set of Valeo Silencio's for my gf for about £9!

For the record, Rain X is fantastic.

Fitted brand new Bosch AeroTwin wipers on Monday. Doubt its due to the fact that they're knackered already. Well, I bloody well hope not. I can't afford 20quid for decent wipers every week.

its the wipers, they will have picked up the rainx too. are you proper giving them a scrub?

Is it definitely the rain x and not the new wipers then? I only ask because rain x isnt *that* tough and vinegar/fairly liquid scrubbed ahould easily get rid of it.

Where did you get the wipers from?

Yep, picking up some Acetone tonight, so will brutally attack the wipers as well.

thing is, I can still see the swirls in the condensation first thing in the morning where I applied the Rain-X on the screen, so there must still be something on there.

Might just bite the bullet and buy some new wipers as well.

I use carlack. Its a little harder to apply than rain-x but it is a bit more effective (when applied properly) and lasts longer. It comes with a glass cleaner stuff you use first.

People over at detailing world say Gtechniq G4 can remove rain-x, its pretty cheap and from what I read is less abrasive than the halfords stuff.
