Such a simple task is really causing me a DIY headache!

I can't find a picture of the exact style of towel roll/bog roll holders but it's similar to this one in the sense that it's flush against the wall.:

Normally with these things there's a vertical screw underneath but in our case there appears to be no screws, just a hole...

These things are properly stuck on, I can't get anything down the back of it and don't want to destroy the tiles... I've tried hammering it but there's no movement at all.

Any thoughts? :o

Can you remove the U shape part that the toilet roll slips onto or rotate it counter-clockwise?

It's not not the same style as the one in the pic but yes, I removed the part that holds the towel but there's no play in the holder at all. It's the shape and size of a hockey puck stuck to the wall when all the components have been removed. There's no signs of glue either...

Take a picture of the inside of the hole with your smartphone on flash setting.

Tried it, that's why I know there's not screw :p

I'll dig out the allen heads on the off chance...

1. Position the mounting plate on the wall at desired location with “UP” facing
you.
2. One at a time, place each anchor screw through the mounting plate, centered
in each large hole. Using a Phillips screwdriver, turn the anchor screw while
applying pressure. Screw will self drill and tap into drywall. Do not over
tighten.
3. Place assembly over the mounting post, setscrew facing down.
4. Tighten setscrew.

Not the best quality but to give you an idea...

Get a small flat head screwdriver in probe that. I'd really expect it to have a grub screw of some sort in it

Try and pry a screwdriver around the rim and see if you can get any leverage? Given it's on tiles you shouldn't mark the wall as long as you're careful.

Just drill out the face plate and then get a screwdriver in and prize i off carefully. You should then be able to work out how its been assembled.

If you own a dremel you could just cut around the edge and pull the front off to see exactly whats holding it behind.

I'd probably try unscrewing the threaded rod with some mole grips.
