A couple years ago I bought my sons a Samsung tablet each. However their interest in them has waned over the past year or so. I still think it could be a useful tool for them so I want to revitalise them.

The stock android operating system takes ages to boot (always has done since new) and has some Samsung bloat that I can't remove.

Is there a way to install a totally clean, lightweight, non proprietary operating system on it?

I would suggest looking on XDA Developers and seeing if their is a thread for that model there as you may then find alternative roms you could consider using (or trying to use and hence bricking you tablet)

I was confused about the model it's not Samsung, it's a HP slate 7 model 4601 I have.

Anyway a search turned up one possible on XDA but then the thread says it doesn't work on the 4601 model.

I don't get why this is so complicated. Its just a tablet with some hardware to drive. Why is it so bloody awkward.
