How to save about 40w and drop 20 degrees from a HD4870

same here i always thought ive clicked it i want to use it i dont need a chris tarent asking me is that my final answer ? because ill need a ask the ordiance but i dont think i would get much of a reply lol :D
 
Received my Watt meter today.

So here are my results.

i7 920 @3.6Ghz currently volted at 1.200v (could drop a little more)
HD4890 Vapor-x with standard 3D clocks 870/1050
Gigabyte UD5
FSP 88Plus 700W (around 90% efficient at 50% load)

My Monitor comsumes about 30W but that's the only thing connected apart from the PC.

Furmark at default 3D 870/1050:- 368W

Furmark + Prime95 870/1050 3.6Ghz:- 463W

Idle clocks at BIOS standard 240/1050:- 245.0W

Ati Tray Tool trick 2D clocks 240/250 Idle:- 205.6W

A saving of 40W or thereabouts.

My PC is on idle about 12 hours a day so this trick saves me a half a Kilowatt a day, that's 5.5p or thereabouts.

Over a week that's 39p. Over a year that's a saving of £20.02!

I don't know how much the card consumes when in 240/250 mode but I think it still burns some watts as it still puts out 48-50 degrees (down from 60-62).

left mine on overnight to d/l some game updates, checked it this morning and the temp was down to 42 from its normal 55 :D.

not a bad guess then at 40w lol iam glad this is proving usful to people i want some one to try it with a 4870x2 as they run seriously hot

and my first name is a secret but its not james ;)
