How to sell personalised plate?

I bought a car last week which came with a personalised plate. I'm wanting to sell it and buy something that means something to me.

What order should everything be done?

Buy new plate, swap to vehicle and sell old one?
Sell old one first, then buy new?
Does the £80 transfer fee apply for removal of the current one, and new one?
 
Put current one on retention -£80
This will return the car to it's original age related plate
Buy new one and pay to assign it to the car (normally included in cost of the plate)


Sell the old one whenever you like

Was at a car show many years ago and saw:

B16 MAC

A12 NOB - on a black BMW, it was spaced and they had added the " ie A 12" NOB. I guess police weren't as hot on numberplates as they are now.
