I'm clueless when it comes to networks. I have a wireless router that my home pc and my mate's laptop is connected to and I don't know how to go about sharing files with eachother. She is on vista and I'm on XP if it makes a difference?

Cheers.

I used a remote access program - VNC to manage all the pcs in my house from my laptop.
Also the built in remote desktop is ok i think but ive never used it and vista / xp may differ.

i cant think of any other ways other than msn which takes forever.

msn is pretty rapid when you are on the same network :D

Firstly, make sure the PCs are in the same workgroup. Right click on My Computer/Computer > Properties > Computer Name.

Then, on the XP machine, go to My Computer, right click on 'Shared Document's > Properties > Sharing. Check 'Share this folder on the network', and 'Allow network users to change my files'. Give it a name, i.e. shared.

From her PC, Start > and type "\\computername\shared" (without the quotes), and you can use that as the shared directory. Both of you have full access to the folder.

a simple prog like vnc is teamviewer

it allows you to do that transfer and if yo leave one at home the other at wrk or in a cafe you can log in control it.. easy peasy
