How to set up 2.1 speakers with CS:S?

This is wierd.

I'm using onboard sounds (for now) with 2 satillites and a sub. Motherboard is Gigabyte P965 DS3. Azalia codec, realtek chip?

Now, before I was using a sub (2.0) sound was perfect in CS:S

Now in order to get the sub to work, I have to set the control panel to 5.1

Now, in CS:S I set the output to 2 speakers, yet when I fire a gun the sound is doubled? It goes ba-bang instead of bang! Wtf? How can I fix this?

This is a bug in css im sure, i noticed the same thing using my xonar D2 but it would normally sort itself if i restarted css. i have no idea how to get around it.

I restarted the whole computer in the end, works fine now.
