How to set up a minecraft server?

I just wanted to make a minecraft server for me and my friend. Should I use the minecraft.server.jar provided or should I use a programme like Hamachi?

What are the benefits of running hamachi?

I'm fairly certain you need the minecraft server file to run then use hamachi (if you wish) to make a VPN. You don't have to use hamachi but makes it easier to set up a direct IP and port to log onto.

As far as I'm aware, havn't tried in a while.
