My mate just sent me a text asking what the best way to do this is, basically it's for setting up a multiple screen display for customers to see, so doesn't need to be high spec at all, just the ability to run 4x screens from one machine

can any laptops do this? or is it a case of getting a shuttle and putting 2x twin head graphics cards in it?

Need to be a fairly portable machine

if the screens are to show all the same (clone) they you can buy things that split the vga output 2,3,4 ways

However if he wants to show different things on each screen then he will need to have 2 g-cards

Google for TrippleHead2Go and DoubleHead2Go

Turns sinle monitor outputs into 2 or 3, so if you have a PC with a graphics card with 2 outputs you could use a tripple to have 3 from the DVI port and then a 4th from the other port.

How precisely is he meant to fit multiple graphics cards into a laptop?

Not, you can't do that on laptops unless it's cloned with a splitter.

One monitor on the dsub-out / tv-out / hdmi-out is only possible with a laptop...

They're not great but you can get USB graphics cards.

If they're all showing the same image then a VGA splitter is the way to go. Go for a powered one, don't use the Y cables.

USB graphics cards are useless. We tested a pile of port replicators for work and they were only any use for word/excel etc. Throw anything with animation at them eg powerpoint or a website and the result was terrible.

Best bet is a SFF PC with a couple of graphics cards from the same chip manufacturer. Even a GeForce FX5200 PCI would be fine as second card.

forgot about this thread

prosk, stop joking around

after speaking to my mate again, it'll be a stationary setup, so a full pc is fine

i'm thinking a ga-p35-DSL, e21x0, 2 or 4gb ram, whatever hard drive, 1x cheapo ati pci-ex card, and 1x cheapo ati pci card

in windows, would you get 4x screens to 'extend' onto then?

ie, 4 monitors on this screen..

good luck finding a PCI graphics card

anyway, i think windows automagically detects how many graphics adapters are connected to screens and plops them into that window.
for example, my PC only has one screen attached even though i've got a 8800 with two DVI ports. if i plugged another monitor in and reebooted windows would automagically allow me to cfigure the second screen from the same menu :)

I'd just go for a asus 3870x2 as it has 4 outputs and will give you the least compatibility problems and better flexibility displaying what is needed and where than using the matrox to go stuff etc.
