I have recently got a surround sound DVD player second hand but I'm not sure if I have set it up wrong.

Does the 5.1 sound still work from an Aux cable from TV to RCA sound input into the DVD player instead of HDMI?

For anything via AUX or stereo jack or SCART, these are all analogue stereo signals, and so they won't automatically decode by Dolby Digital or DTS.

What's used instead is Dolby ProLogic (DPL for short), or Dolby ProLogic II (DPLII) in either Movie / Music / Game mode. This is a later version of DPL which has better rear effects processing.

If these are not available then there's probably some in-house surround algorithm. Check the manual.

Typically, once set then the surround system will apply the same format of decoding to that input until the mode is changed to a different version.

thanks for the info,
I think I have an optical cable so will give that a try

That’s starting to make sense now! I didn’t realise I had to have the sound setting correct.

thanks for the wealth of knowledge guys!
