hey. me and my friend both just bought HL2DM on steam but have tryed everything and no matter who hosts the other one cant join the game? it doesnt come up in steams list of servers and even clicking join through the chat box it says the persons server isnt responding even though there playing the game? and when i host it only seems to be displayed on my pc in the lan section instead of the internet section? geez. why is it so damn hard just to play an online game with a m8? really defeats the point of paying for games...

When you make a server in the game I think there may be a console setting which opens it up to outside connections, I can't remember the exact command though as it's been ages since I've had to do it.

Otherwise try hosting a server by using the half life dedicated server in the steam tools section, you may need to download it. It will be free.

EDIT: The command to use in your console after you've loaded a map is "sv_lan 0". Then get him to connect to your external IP by typing "connect <IP>" into his console.

My knowledge of these things are as such:

Host:
Create Game
[In the console]:
sv_lan 0
ip [insert your i.p. here]

Client:
[In the Console]:
ip [insert host ip here]
OR
Try joining by STEAM friend list.

Install Hamachi.
Choose a port number
Forward that port (if not already open)
Copy mates IP from Hamachi
'connect xx.xx.xx.xx' in console.

:)

meh, no luck. how come i can see 1000 other peoples servers on the internet but i cant see my own and my friend cant see mine? geez. pay for a game and i expect it to work!

did you try what we've advised you to on here?

Server:

Load map,
"sv_lan 0" into console

*find IP and give it to mate*

Mate:

"connect <IP>" into console

no one ever said your server would appear on the server list, pretty sure it needs to be a dedicated server to do that.

Forward ports (google for port forwarding and HL2DM) to the host machine. Then on the client machine connect using the console command "connect", followed by the EXTERNAL (not LAN) IP of the host machine.
