How to slow down my cpu

Hi all,

I'm looking fora bit of advice. I'm running the Intel i5 2300 @2.80GHz which I bought from OCUK as part of a bundle. Now the system is great but I've always had problems when running Battlefield 3, I get crash to desktops quite often, it's often worse in planes. Lots of people have had probs with that game so I put it down to that.

Now I recently got into the Planetside 2 beta and it seem I'm suffering the same problem, and again flying usually aggravates the problem. I'm assuming this is to do with the speed and increased draw distance.

There's a possibility that running a 32bit OS and only having 4Gb RAM is the problem, however someone also said they'd 'turned down' the overclocking on their CPU and then had no more problems like this.

So I'm looking for a bit of advice on settings for my CPU. I can simply turn off the 'Turbo' mode in the BIOS but I'm not sure if that's the best solution.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers :)

you can try turning of "turbo" but i would be looking more in the even viewer of windows to see why its crashing , memory? driver?

think id be looking at the gfx card more
you need to download some stuff to find the problem
coretemp, afterburner, change drivers etc

Thanks guys. I've checked eventvwr but couldn't really see anything showing up on the specific time of the crash. Might be missing something though. Also, I thought about the gfx card but all other games work fine, some with really nice gfx too. Just seems to be an issue with BF3 and now P2 :/

do you know when it last crashed? if so go to start and in search bar type

perfmon /rel

hit enter

reliability monitor will load. at the bottom will be a timeline, look on here for date and time fo crash. should should a red cross of yellow exclamation mark. check these for any details on why the application crashed.

Ok just tried it after turning off Turbo mode and it crashed again sure enough. I had eventvwr open and this is the info it gives for the application error...

Faulting application name: PlanetSide2.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5052855e

Don't suppose that means anything to anyone? :)

Have you got latest Bios update / gfx card drivers etc? if not go update and try again. My guess would be a driver issue. not that the driver is faulty , game might be causing it to clash with another driver or componant on system and crashing it out.

nope means nothing to me but i would say its more driver related. obviously your playing a beta and can expect it to crash but bf3 as well i would say driver

Could the ram be faulty?
Try memtest on first 1 stick then if that passes try the other
I am just throwing ideas your way :)

I'll try memtest later on to rule that out. I'm using a GTX 460 with the latest nvidia drivers. Just put them on a couple of days ago in fact so they are bang up to date. Is there any way to see if there's a driver clash?

Would just like to update this. I bit the bullet yesterday and got a 64bit copy of windows and it seems it's sorted my crashing to desktop issue. Planetside 2 seems to be stable now and I'm hoping that BF3 will be as well as that seemed to be an identical issue. I'm still running with 4Gb of DD3 RAM but I think the 64bit win 7 must be able to utilise it a bit better.

Anyway, hopefully this will help anyone having a similar issue.

Cheers all :)

If you've done a fresh install was most likely some conflicting drivers then.

good to ehar its all fixed (hopefully!)

I might have been soft errors on your drive, or simply messy WIndows install. x64 OS version has nothing to do with stability of games against x32 revision.

the crashing to desktop issue with bf3 was usually the core voltage on pre overclocked cards. increasing a little using software like msi afterburner helped for most people. I have a pre over clocked msi card and always got crashing to desktop with bf3 and more recently other games. Still waiting for msi to release a new vga bios, other manufacturers did this to resolve the issue.
