We are going to paint the bathroom ceiling and walls and we have this long crack across the whole ceiling. I'm assuming just painting over it won't be sufficient:D

What's the best way to tackle it?

Thanks!

I'm sure there's a proper solution or product but i had the same issue here with a bathroom ceiling and i found fractionally opening the crack and filling with flexible gap filler caulk (that can be painted and sanded), rubbing/sanding it down flat and painting seemed to have sorted it.
Like @Relentless81, i used standard filler first time around and it cracked within a handful of months which i assume is caused either by movement or moisture in the ceiling boards.

Widen the crack and use lightweight filler (it's flexible and foam-like and can cope with expansion and movement unlike the usual polyfiller)
