Hey all.
I move house this Friday. The house is not a new build and was (prior to today as contracts exchanged) owned by a part exchange company.

How do I go about setting up gas and electric for this?
I have looked on a few comparison websites but they all ask who I am currently with, which I don't know. It may say it in the huge stack of paperwork I have but even then I am not very clear on how to proceed :p.

You have to phone the current companies who are supplying the property at the moment and set up accounts with them. Then you can look into transferring them to your chosen providers.

If your a new tenant or moving into a new house basically you don't need to know who supplies it. Pick a supplier of your choice, give them the current readings, MPRN's if you have them( meter point reference numbers) etc and they can find out who the supplier was and take care of the rest. The old tenant / occupant should have really provided a final reading. You don't have to register with the existing supplier, if they tell you otherwise they are lying. The existing supplier had a contract with the previous tenant / occupier not you.

TAKE READINGS FROM THE MOMENT YOU MOVE IN. It's entirely possible the previous tenant will try to 'under-read' the meters and shift some of their gas and electricity onto you.

^This tbh, I moved into my first property a week and a half ago and was ready to take photos of the meter readings but turned out they are both pay as you go meters and were both using the emergency so i just called the current supplier (British Gas) to sort it out.

I'm sorry but you do not have to register with the current supplier, those days are long gone. Find a supplier of your choice, ring them and give them any details they ask for.
If you are to contact the current supplier then it would be to simply tell them you are the new occupier and you do not want them to supply you with gas / electricity.
The second you set up an account with the current supplier you will have to pay for anything used, so if you then want to change supplier you will have to settle your bill with them first.
If you still need to know who the current provider is then follow the link i provided in an earlier post.
