How to sort out my wireless signal - Router? Homeplugs? Ethernet cable?

Hey all.

Moved into my own house 4-6 weeks ago. I love it all apart from one thing, the internet.

I am with Plusnet and the wireless signal from their free router is awful. It drops out at least once an hour and even when connected it just stops working many times per hour. Hugely frustrating. I cannot even use Iplayer!

I think the issue is with the wireless. From my personal experience at my parents house, wireless is rubbish. I have a PCI Netgear wireless N card in my desktop.

Options:
1) Put a phone socket in the study but this will require getting new cabling and nails to pin the cable on the outside of the house.
2) Use homeplugs. How well do these work?
3) Get a new wireless router from a decent brand and hope it is better, but then my study is the box room next to the airing cupboard so I am not sure how well it will all work.

What would OCUK do?

My first preference would be running a cable. I'd suggest that you install network cable (Cat5e) rather than using telephone cable. You can then either use it to wire a telephone extension, or the better option of leaving the router next to the Master Socket and connecting via Ethernet.

If you do decide to install a network cable, and it's going outside, you can buy kits that include everything you need including external grade Cat5e cable. You then just need a drill bit long enough to go through a cavity wall.

For less hassle Homeplugs are a good option. They work well enough for most people, and if they can be returned if they don't work for you (DSR regulations in general, and OcUK's '14 Days Satisfaction Guarantee').

I would use the home plugs mate providing your current router has all the features that you need turn the wireless off and use the home plugs.
