I've got a set of Logitech X-540's for my sound, but also a set of Tritton AX720 5.1 headphones.

Right now I have to unplug my logitech speakers to plug in my headphones to switch between them.

Is there a way I can have them both plugged in? I've purchased 3 3.5mm Y splitter cables, but the actual plugs are thicker than normal and i cannot fit them all in at the same time. I've also tried running the AX720's through optical instead, however my Creative X-Fi champion platinum doesn't output 5.1 through optical

I'm a bit stuck and don't want to waste money on more cables that are too large

You purchased the wrong sort of splitter I imagine. Go on eBay and look for a 3.5mm splitter, ignore any that mention phono or RCA as you want 3.5mm male to 2x female.

sorry i didn't describe it properly, the connections are correct, 3.5mm, however its the actual plastic of the plug that is too big. It is quite chunky. Unlike say a pair of earphones where the plug is quite small

Due this this, when plugged in, i cannot plug one next to it as the plastic takes up a lot of space

if that makes sense? not very good with words i'm not lol

I think I know what you mean, but you can get splitters which have little cables for each 3.5mm jack, not just the ones which are one pieces of plastic.

buy a 3 and half mm splitter, I take it you want to split the signal from set of headphones to two?

Re-read the op,and maybe the rest of the thread . . . .

OP, try searching for slimline, or use a knife (watch fingers!) and remove the plastic till it does fit.
