How to stop it automatically logging into Windows Live Messenger when I check my hotmail

Anyone know how to do this? Every time I check my email, it logs me into windows live messenger, which I'd rather not happen. In the windows live messenger settings there's an option called "Open Messenger when I open a link to a website that tries to interact with Messenger", but this option doesn't do anything.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but it's a difficult thing to search for.
