i have a user at work on a ibm t41 laptop (winxp sp2) whos power profile keeps on resetting back to: (the settings i want are in brackets)

-ask for password on standby resume (off)
-standby on lid close (no action)
-shutdown on power buttom (hibernate)
-sleep on sleep button (sleep)

we try not give admin rights to end-users so his account has the limited "user" rights only. i changed his power options to as above, even did a runas on power profiles as an admin and also changed it there as it was different there too (it seems to affect things like lid closing believe it or not!) and it works for a while..

but randomly, it will reset back to the above default settings without me doing anything which is annoying!

if i give him admin rights, the settings will stick but obviously want to avoid that and after doing a lot of trial and error, if i turn off hibernate (which we would like to be on), the settings dont seem to reset, even when the user has limited rights only.

how'd i stop this?

You may be able to set (some) of those settings in group (local) policy on the laptop which will make them apply to all the users of the laptop regardless of user level and rights.

Have a look, can't hurt.
