My r9 290 as a new problem in the form of the memory spiking all the time, ever time it happens the game i am playing locks up for a few seconds.

if you look at the graph, up the red line is game play but you can see ever after i exit the game the memory continues to spike

Soooo how do i stop it? i had the same problem with an 7970 but cant remember how i fixed it

Mine used to do that, but i blamed it on the game. Since then i changed drivers now on the latest omega drivers and now no probs, also i overclocked the gpu and gave it a tad more volts to eat. Could give these a try?

Also what game is it happening on? Is it a specific game or multiple games?

The memory speed spiking like that is normal, mine is triggered whenever I scroll in a web browser, or play a video or advert, etc. The only bit that isn't normal is you mention any game you're playing freezes when it happens. What actually happens to the memory speed when this freezing takes place? Does it drop (I presume the memory speed is at max because you're in game), or does Afterburner show some other speeds/activity when these freezes happen? Don't suppose you have any screenshots of Afterburner when one of these freezes happen in-game, do you?

look at the photo in main post, when the memory useage drops thats me exiting a game(titanfall), if you look up one to the memory clock you can see it spiking ever 3 seconds, well every spike was a lock up.

it locks when the memory clock drops and picks back up when the clock go's back up, there was some parts when i had a 1/2min's with no locks and the memory clock was on full with no drops.
its not just in game play it also happens when your in lobby's or just at the menu with a VT rolling

You definitely shouldn't be getting a lock up every time your memory speed changes. Have you got anything in the Windows Event Viewer to show something trying to be accessed and timing out when this happens?

If I was in your position, I would try DDU to uninstall all GPU driver fragments, then try a fresh install of the latest AMD drivers. If that doesn't fix it, then I'd be unplugging my SSD/HDD's, chucking in a spare drive and putting a fresh install of Windows on it and the latest AMD drivers. If the problem is fixed, then I know it's worth the time reinstalling Windows afresh on my proper drives. If the problem persists, then I know a Windows install won't fix it and I haven't lost my currently set up system.

I had a new problem :p

When i started a game i would get 5mins of game play then black screen, after about 10 seconds it would go to the desktop but the GPU was running at full load i tried closing app's app in the task manager but the GPU would stay at 100% load i did a few reset and tests and it was the same so i formatted and am not in the proses of reinstalling everything.

I had a few over clocking programs installed that did not play nice with the card so i am putting to down to that?(hope)
also noticed the memory usage was going to 100% when playing titanfall and your could play that on an Commodore vic 20 so i am thinking the was programs of some sort that was eating up the memory, all the software on my system is genuine so hoping its not a miner of some sort.

Ok so a did a full reinstall of windows, all drivers and games. just loaded titanfall and boom the same the game locks up but now as bad and black screen back to desktop after 5-10min

the gpe core temp was 66c
the cpu core temp was 43c
nothing in the system is over clocked, any idears? should i try older drivers

Edit:

Dropped the ram down the 1200mhz, no change jumpy and black screen bqack to desktop with the message "driver crashed so had to reset"
dropped the GPU to 900Mhz ram at full speed, and its jumpy but no black screen? am i looking at a bad GPU?

Edit:

card at stock with +18 on the VDDC and still jumpy but no black screen

With the fresh install you can see the the spike is not as often how ever you can see the ram and core spike at the same time. and i also noticed the game is maxing out the memory at 1080p

The screen shot is me opening the game playing for 10min(ish) and when it all drops that is the drivers black screening the systems back to desktop
