So my board is being collected on Tuesday and I didn't go $or advanced replacement, so I have to keep my chip somewhere safe until I get my replacement. I chucked the packaging having planned on leaving it in place for a good few years, so not sure what's safe to store it in. Or more importantly, what's not safe.

Thanks in advance

What CPU is it? If it has pins, find some anti-static foam if possible and store the CPU on that with the pins facing into the foam, and then place an anti static bag over it. If it's pinless then just chuck it into the anti static bag.

I s this your 2500K? if so just place it carefully onto paper, a magazine etc, and just put it somewhere you wont kick it/disturb it.

Yeah its my sb chip. The paper thing sounds like my best plan of action, wasn't sure if there was some obvious reason why I couldn't do that so thought I'd ask first. cheers

The where you won't disturb it part is crucial!

Speaking from experience here. I had an old Athlon 64 3700+ left carefully in a secluded and unused section of my desk. Was fine for a few weeks until I dropped my lint-free monitor cloth onto it somehow. Snagged several pins, and with hardly any pressure at all (it seemed) in moving it, I now have to either sit here straightening out a bunch of pins or chuck it.

Although... aren't SB chips ones with the pins in the socket rather than on the CPU? If that's the case I guess they'd be pretty resistant to most types of mishap (certainly to ones similar to mine)...

Well, my desk won't be in use while my rig is in pieces, so I may leave it bang in the centre on a piece of paper (my gf will be informed with extreme emphasis) and put a box over it to keep dust off. Plan?

it comes in a little plastic housing right?

i would say:

1) in a jiffy/freezer bag
2) wrap that in tissue
3) safe drawer

:)

rap in a piece of paper put it in an old braclet box (if there are any lying around in the misses draws lol) and put it in a safe place out the way.
