I have a Synology NAS which currently I use to stream video to my DLNA TV and I have never thought about music. I have all the music stored on the NAS and would like to access and stream it to my ipad and then thought about buying a Sonos 1 speaker to output the music from the ipad.

What would be the easiest method of doing this? We have three ipads in the house so each ipad would access the same music content from a single source and then output it to the Sonos.

Sonos can easily do this. With Sonos, you tell it where your music is and then with the app its just plays what you want through the speaker. It doesn't actually come out of the iOS device but will display what its playing etc.

So the Sonos will connect to my home network and then stream directly from the NAS?

I thought about using the ipads as a in-between so that you have some visual control over what is playing and is available.

Yes the Sonos can talk to the NAS and the Sonos app on the iPad will let you control it - just buy the speaker and all will become clear. The Sonos UI is very good and easy to work with on iOS.

They'll stream directly from the NAS and the iPad acts as a remote control. Your setup is exactly what Sonos is designed to do (that and stream from internet sources like Spotify).

And once you have the app on the iPad, you'll be able to stream what you want from the various providers i.e. Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer etc and listen to whatever radio station you like.
Sonos is awesome.

Thanks, and to share the music on the Synology NAS I would just either create a DLNA share folder or move the music files to the default music share?

Then the Sonos will see the music?

I am totally under using what the Synology is capable of to be honest.

I would just move the music to the default music share.

Then in settings, in the Sonos app, you will be able to browse to the folder and select it.

Or, you could probably type in the path to your music share.

Mine for example \\QNAP\Qmusic
