With banks you have a switch service.
With energy switching is also dead easy.
Same with mobiles.
Even BT to BT supplier seems simple

But Im not completely sure when going from a BT line (talk talk in my case) to virgin.

My contract is up soon. And virgin have a cracking offer. But I'm not sure about the switch.
Do you have to ring talk talk and cancel as well as sign up to virgin? Or is there a switch service?

I've been with talk talk years but I suspect in this case they cant beat virgin. But I will try giving them a call

They’re different services which you could have simultaneously, so you will need to cancel Virgin yourself.

If you were moving from one to another, both on an openreach line, then the new provider would take over.

This is what I thought.

I'm moving other way around but I wasn't sure if there was a switch type thing. I'll call talk talk tomorrow.

They are going to have to be really really cheap for me to stay. Under 15!

Virgin rarely if ever have 'cracking offers' on, as a rule they have almost the same marketing new acquisition spend each month applied differently, 'offer' price less discount/sweetener and any cash back via Quidco/TCB works out essentially the same each month other than when price rises move things.

Given what OpenReach charge wholesale on your connection and that in reality you're asking TT to do it for £12.50/m ex VAT, they're more likely to be glad to see the back of you as you're just not worth it at your stated price point - you'd be lucky to find a standard retail tariff for line rental for that in this day and age, one of the subsidised social tariff plans perhaps. If you aren't bothered about porting the fixed line number you may have (yes, honestly, some people still use them and get very upset about them), just book a disconnection with TT and install with VM, personally i'd suggest arranging a slight overlap just incase something happens, but it's up to you and mobiles are a thing. At some point next year they should be process to allow a more frictionless way to switch OR to VM and vice vera, but not yet.

Talk talk gave me fibre 65 for 16 a month. I took it.

So not 'under £15' as you said :)

No but close enough. Swapping back from virgin in 18 months and swapping to them now is a hassle I don't need if I can avoid it. For sake of 18 (1 pound over 18 months) pounds I decided I'd stay.
