im still stuck and cant sort out a minor problem im having. im using an hdmi cable from my gpu to my monitor. so whatever way its setup its using the gpu for sound via hdmi to monitor.. i want to use my mic and headset tho and when i plug it into the onboard sound and mic jacks on my board it wont pick them up. ive tryed looking in sound control panel but dunno howto enable onboard sound and stop it getting sent via hdmi to my monitor speakers.

hope you understand wot i mean lol can any1 help?

Type mmssys.cpl in the Windows 7 search box when you press the Windows

1) Press The Windows Key.
2) Type mmsys.cpl in the box.

You should now have 'Playback', 'Recording' etc.

3) Select the device you want as default for 'Playback' and then for 'Recording'.

Assuming you are Windows 7 of course.

ye i have win7. ive tryed. it says no items match your result.

when i find the playback options in control panel the only thing that shows is the monitor.

onboard sound drivers should come with the disc provided with your motherboard.
have a look in device manager:
Sound.jpg

Nvidia is sound via HDMI
Realtek is my onboard sound.

Can't you just right click on the sound icon in the bottom right corner and click playback devices. Then right click on speakers and choose them as default device.

I could be wrong but it sounds like hdmi audio is set as the default for playing back sound

ok ive uninstalled the nvidia hd audio drivers and the onboard drivers. then reinstalled the onboard sound drivers. its now showing more options in playback. ive plugged in headset and enabled speakers as default. there is sound coming out headset now but it seems to be very low and with a lot of echo. there is no sound settings enabled. any ideas?

ok ive found out that the audio jack on the top of the case works fine and theres no echos and is loud. i guess ill stick with that and sort out the back ports another time, i just wanna pop heads on bad company now :D

thanks for the feedback ;)

Have a look on the microphone tab in the Asus sound panel and there should be a setting to disable or mute microphone playback. The echo could be from your mic picking up sound and playing it back through the headset

*Edit - never mind, looks like you sorted it :)
