how to sync with laptop ?

hi
got a laptop and would like to sync stuff like emails from my main pc everytime my laptop connects to the network
can this be done?

Not sure if Synctoy will handle emails. Plus he also wants it to be done automatically by the sounds of it when his PC connects to the network.

I've been wanting to do this also but thought the only way would be to run an exchange server.

Synctoy will do files OK. Its the emails I don't think it can do unless they are somehow exported into files first.

And I also cannot think of a way to get a sync running when the laptop connects to the laptop. Although saying that the PCs at Uni run some batch scripts it looks like when I logon. So perhaps the PC could be made to send a batch script to the laptop which runs the script as it receives it?

I'm sure sent & received emails are stored as files.

If you go into outlooks settings you can select where you want them to be stored so isn't it just a case of syncing those files?

The only problem would be that any sent or received emails on the laptop would be over written when the sync happens.

Not individually. They'll be stored in some archive type file somewhere. I meant exporting the emails from Outlook or Thunderbird as individual email files.

Exactly. Just thought that if the OP wants his emails sent to the laptop as well as the PC he can setup an email rule on his PC email client to send them to the laptop as well. I suppose that makes the rest a bit easier.

Or he could start using an email technology that actually supports synchronization such as IMAP or Exchange. Depends a bit on your ISP though, BY run an IMAP service but I think its in the minority.

Minority surely is what you mean? I have an account with www.fastmail.fm who support IMAP.
