'evening gents,

Laptop is a Acer Aspire 2920 3a2g25mi, and no it's not mine before you jump on me!

I haven't seen it yet, but I reckon it's the screen as an external monitor works but its LCD won't. Don't know if it's the backlight or the actual panel that's dead. The user is, ahem, blonde. :(

Anyways, it's out of warranty so there's no harm in me taking it apart before she goes and buys herself a new one. Hopefully it'll just be a dodgy ribbon cable or something simple.

Where does one obtain disassembly guides for something like that? For my MacBook Pro they're all on ifixit.com, but this Acer is far more generic and less interesting?

Cheers,

We used to get this issue before with some of the older Acer models. First thing I'd check is the backlight, ask her to switch the machine on in sunlight or with some light present and see if she can see the display. It'll be very feint so you may need to hold it up to the light to see it.

If it's that, I'd probably hazard a guess at the inverter (iirc). If she moves the screen by opening it and closing it, and it flickers a lot, it could be the ribbon. Never really had too much issue with the panels dying completely but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

Oh, and if you need spare parts, the Acer parts team can be contacted on 0870 853 1005.

That's useful, thanks!

Roughly speaking, what would you expect the backlight/inveter to cost? And how much for a panel? I guess the ribbon can't be much.

The laptop is three years old, and wasn't exactly the latest & greatest at the time, so there is of-course the point where spending £xx to fix it isn't worth it.

I honestly wouldn't know sorry. I'd see what Acer charge for new genuine bits, if it's too much, have a look on the Bay, there's usually loads of third party screens and parts on there.

Unfortunately we don't tend to fix much of the Acer stuff as generally, their warranty services are pretty good. I'd say on an older model like that, the parts shouldn't be massively expensive.

Most common faults with laptop screens are

1 the inverter dies, either altogether or intermittantly, you can diagnose this as above, if the image stays on screen but is dim then its the inverter or connections to the inverter.

2 the data cable either gets dislodged from either the back of the lcd or where it connects to the mainboard, symptoms would be, the backlight stays on, but the picture breaks up either in section or completely white. A break in the data cable can also give these symptoms.

3 The lcd panel itself goes bad, again it will either show a blank screen or random lines or colours appear, pressing on the back of the screen can temporily restore the image.
