How to tell what encryption is used?

Hi there,

Guess this is probably the best section for this question.

I'm currently trying to break a code/cipher given to me by my lecturer, but I was wondering if there is any resources available to help me understand what encryption method was used.

I broke the first code with was a base 64 encrypt with a Caesar shift afterwards.

I'm not asking you to solve it for me or anything like that just maybe a site link that you may know of the help understanding what was use.

I think it will be very hard to just guess, except for reversed, binary, hex or base64.

There is this website you could use which has many encryption methods, crypo.com, then try trial and error.
