Okay, should be going to pull my audio from my now defunct MX-5 this weekend... I will inspect the speakers, but I think they should be fine, the amp will most likely be fine but if anything wouldn't I'd expect it to be the head unit...

My car took a 60-70mph rotational impact that spun it like a top. Didn't touch the doors, just the engine... but I'm still curious as to what works from what doesnt...

If there was a CD in the tray at the time it might possibly have got into somewhere it shouldnt, but other than that I cant see any damage being done to the electronics.

The speakers will be fine providing the suspension, spider and cone have no visible damage and the basket isnt deformed.

Basically, it should just work as it did before the crash.

There was, but what about the other bits - it had moving parts.

I hope its fine, because I was very fond of the audio in that car and if I get the same model it will go straight in...

BUUUTT I want a way to test it, so that I know whether to take it out or leave it for the insurance cheque

if you wana test it still works, hook it upto a car battery, with wires from the constant and the ingnition, ground it, and it'l switch on. As for speakers, you'd need to buy a ISO wiring harness, and then a lot of joining cables, should all be fine tho.

A friends car was written off in a crash, he striped it off everything, all the audio, even his alloys and put some steels on, the insurance chap didnt seem to care!

Well, if the car is a writeoff just pull every wire you can out through the hole in the dash and cut them (on the loom side of any connectors!). Bodge the right wires to the right power bits and speakers and such to check it all works and then disconnect the HU from the connector ready to plug into your next car. Cheaper than buying a new harness ;)
