How to unlock a SGS4

So EE want to charge £8.99 to unlock my Dad's phone. Seems like such a con given the amount of money they take off you in a 24 month contract, but there you go.

I'm assuming there are other ways to unlock these, flashing a different ROM perhaps. Or maybe there isn't and he just needs to pay up, it isn't a significant sum of course but it just seems wrong to charge a customer to unlock a phone that is effectively theirs at the end of the contract.

Btw the last 4 phones my dad has had from EE have not been locked - have you already tried a different SIM?

I spent a while looking for a free way but nothing worked on my EE locked GS4, in the end I sold it to someone who used EE and didn't want it unlocked. 9 quid to EE for a definite unlock is probably not too bad vs a fiver on eBay for something that might not work.

Yeah I did try that but didn't work. I grabbed a Tesco SIM last night and confirmed it was locked.

Ahh well, might just go the easy route if £9 is considered reasonable.

I got this to work with mine a while back.

It did require a bit of faffing around, installing an earlier modem firmware being the main thing.. but it has remained unlocked through various ROMs, both stock and custom, rooted and unrooted.

The nine quid's undoubtedly the easier route.

As far as I know the unlocking method giffgaff provided does not work with EE phones. Paying seems to be the only option to unlock them.
