How to unlock T-mobile HTC Desire

I have an HTC desire on t-mobile. I have just upgraded and want to give the desire to my wife. I've never actually unlocked a phone before. Please could someone advise me on how its done. Do I just phone t-mobile or do i need to buy an unlock code from somewhere?

dodgy guy on the market will be cheapest, or ebay, if your wife is on orange then you may not need todo anything :-)

Orange SIMs do not work in T-M handsets so you do need to do something. What you need is a SIM unlock code, ebay is full of people who can get you them. To actually unlock the handset you put in a foreign SIM (as in, a SIM of a different network not your home one) and it will ask you to enter the code. You get 10 attempts to enter it usually. When you buy off anyone they will ask you for your IMEI first - you can give them this, there's no harm in it. To get your IMEI goto your dialer (if you use dialerOne on android go back to the default HTC) and type in *#06#, it will then show it.

you can do it for free using some software someone on XDA made/aquired but if you have no experience of this its probably easier to just pay t mobile or a dodgy phone guy £10 to do it

i used that a few weeks ago to unlock my t-mobile desire, it's being used on o2 at the moment.

- boot into the bootloader on the phone
- run the .exe

that is assuming you have the drivers installed and the pc can see the phone.

yes i can. phone is not on me but i have installed the sdk. i can see my orange sf

T-mobile may give you the code if you ask, tell them you're going abroad and would like to use a local sim card if they're funny about it.
